Meet Maman, the oversize spider which was supposed to remind us of how small animals might feel. It also is supposed to symbolize the artist's mother apparently. I met the sculptor when they deconstructed the piece a couple of days after I took this image. She didn't really look as if her mum had been a spider though... neither did she treat Maman as one would treat his/her mother for that matter... the thing got ripped apart by cranes!

A pictorial map mosaic graces the entrance lobby of the Henry A. Wallace Visitor and Education Center at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt National Historic Site. The image is adapted from a 1949 drawing by Olin Dows, a Hudson Valley WPA artist, depicting Hyde Park as it was in FDR's youth.
The Vanderbilt Mansion, located 2.5 miles north on Route 9, sits in the Vanderbily Mansion National Historic Site--211 acres of property overlooking the Hudson River. Frederick William Vanderbilt purchased the property in 1895 for use as a seasonal country residence. The crowning feature is the 54-room Beaux Arts mansion, completed in 1898 by the McKim, Mead & White.
