Crossett Library at Bennington College celebrated World Book Day on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. The celebration originated in Catalonia on April 23, St. George’s Day, El dia de San Jordi, where the tradition of exchanging a flower for a book began. This free event took place on the veranda of Crossett. Everyone was invited to stop by and share the title of a favorite book. This title was attached to a flower. In exchange for sharing the favorite book title everyone received a flower with another person's favorite book title.
World Book Day is sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, who see this event as a “new opportunity for political decision-makers, economic agents and those active in civil society to give pride of place, each in their own field, to this unique instrument of culture, education, participation, communication and entertainment – the book.”
